Provisional IEC figures show the Democratic Alliance with a clear majority on the Midvaal local council in Gauteng: 19 of 30 seats, after all voting districts were counted for the Meyerton-centred municipality (The Outlier, update 14:08 Africa/Johannesburg on 6 November 2026; Rateweb Midvaal results from IEC data; ESP Midvaal).

A party needs 16 seats to govern alone. The DA is three seats above that line. Treat seats as provisional until the IEC formally declares the council.

How did the vote go?

Rateweb lists the count as complete (100% of voting districts) and the DA on about 61.9% of the vote (49,322 votes), the ANC 16.1% (12,805) and VF Plus 7.7% (6,097). ESP shows all 39 voting districts and all 15 wards in, with the DA on about 61.3% of ward ballots.

How does this fit Gauteng?

Midvaal (Meyerton, Walkerville, Henley on Klip and surrounds) was already a DA-majority council after 2021, when the party also held 19 of 30 seats. This result keeps that outright control while many neighbouring Gauteng councils look hung or still unfinished.

Reported earlier covered the West Rand and Vaal race when Midvaal was still leading but not yet declared: West Rand and Vaal: who leads. Merafong (Carletonville) is a separate hung-council story: Merafong hung council.

Nationally, The Outlier had about 85% of voting districts counted by early afternoon on 6 November, with 92 of 137 decided local councils showing no majority.

What happens next in Midvaal?

Once the IEC declares the council elected, the first council meeting must be held within 14 calendar days, where councillors elect a speaker and mayor under the Municipal Structures Act. With an outright majority, the DA can elect those office-bearers without needing a coalition partner, unless it chooses a broader deal.
