Update (08:30 SAST, 31 October 2026): The outages carried into Saturday. Johannesburg Water's Friday evening boards still show Morningside, Grand Central, Erand Tower, Crown Gardens, Cosmo City and Honeydew critically low, plus a burst pipe in Rivonia, with no restoration time (Midrand notice, 30 Oct 20:05). Follow today's updates here: Johannesburg water outages today (31 October 2026).

Update (15:20 SAST, 30 October 2026): Johannesburg Water says some Randburg and Roodepoort systems got more water earlier today, but incoming flows dropped as the day went on and demand is still higher than supply. Waterval Tower, Quellerina Tower, Northcliff Reservoir and Northcliff Tower are supplying fairly, Corriemoor Reservoir is supplying fairly to adequately with limited water, and Witpoortjie Reservoir and Tower are at fair to low levels, so low pressure or no water is possible as the day goes on. Littlefalls and Stubensvalley also report low pressure to no water. Alternative water is being provided where possible (Johannesburg Water, 30 Oct, 15:10). Separately, Johannesburg Water says critically low levels at Honeydew Reservoir and Tower are causing low pressure or no water in Northwold, with no confirmed restoration time (Johannesburg Water, 30 Oct).

Large parts of Johannesburg are still dealing with dry taps or weak pressure on Friday, 30 October 2026. In its latest notices, issued on Thursday night, Johannesburg Water says Sandton and Midrand reservoirs are low or critically low, three water towers are empty with pumping suspended, and parts of the Central, Commando and Randburg systems are struggling (Sandton notice, 29 Oct 21:55; Midrand notice, 29 Oct 19:30). There is still no restoration time.

Northcliff, Eagles Nest and Kibler Park were supplying fairly to adequately on Thursday evening (Central board). Johannesburg Water has not published street lists. If you are not sure which reservoir supplies you, check johannesburgwater.co.za or ask on @JHBWater.

Why is the water still off?

Johannesburg Water blames poor incoming supply and high demand, which stop reservoirs and towers from recovering (Sandton notice; media statement, 29 Oct). It is throttling and closing some outlets overnight to build storage, so Berea and Yeoville reservoirs were on overnight closure on Thursday (Central board). It also says a strike is affecting operations and delaying responses to critical service issues (Johannesburg Water, 29 Oct).

When will water return?

No restoration times have been given. Johannesburg Water says pumping at Grand Central Tower will resume once incoming supply improves and reservoir levels recover sufficiently (Midrand notice), and that it is monitoring Sandton and adjusting the system to share supply fairly (Sandton notice). In Roodepoort, the Witpoortjie Reservoir outlet closes on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 14:00, and Witpoortjie Tower pumping is restricted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 14:00 to 06:00, until 31 December 2026 (Johannesburg Water).

Are water restrictions coming?

Johannesburg Water has proposed stricter Level 1 restrictions to cut demand by about 15%: no garden watering between 06:00 and 18:00, spray nozzles on hosepipes, no hosing down paving and no wetting building sand. It says it will consider Level 2 if demand keeps rising (media statement, 29 Oct).

What should I do and who do I call?

Use water sparingly and store some in clean, sealed containers when supply returns. Johannesburg Water says alternative supply is coordinated through ward councillors (Sandton notice; Midrand notice).
