Update (08:30 SAST, 30 October 2026): The outages carried into Friday. Johannesburg Water's latest notices on Thursday night said Sandton and Midrand reservoirs were still low and the Illovo, Bryanston and Grand Central towers were empty, with no restoration time (Sandton notice, 29 Oct 21:55). Follow today's updates here: Johannesburg water outages today (30 October 2026).
Update (16:25 SAST, 29 October 2026): Johannesburg Water says its systems are severely constrained, with high demand and heavy draw-off stopping reservoirs and towers from recovering, and teams are now reconfiguring the network and throttling supply to stabilise it. Customers may get lower pressure or short interruptions while this happens, and recovery will vary by system. The affected systems it lists are Commando (Crosby, Brixton, Hursthill), Central (Parktown, Berea, Yeoville, Randjieslaagte, Linksfield, Alexander Park), Sandton (Bryanston, Illovo, Morningside), Midrand (Grand Central, President Park, Erand), Randburg and Roodepoort (Honeydew, Cosmo City, Waterval Tower), Soweto and the south (Power Park, Chiawelo, Meadowlands, Zondi, Crown Gardens, Eagles Nest) and the Deep South (Lawley, Ennerdale, Lenasia, Orange Farm). It has also proposed stricter Level 1 water restrictions to cut demand by about 15%: no garden watering between 06:00 and 18:00, spray nozzles on hosepipes, no hosing down paving and no wetting building sand. If demand keeps rising it will consider Level 2. There is still no restoration time (Johannesburg Water media statement, 29 Oct 15:20).
Large parts of northern Johannesburg woke up to dry taps or weak pressure on Thursday, 29 October 2026. Johannesburg Water says poor incoming supply has left reservoirs in Midrand and Sandton critically low, with pumping to four water towers suspended (Midrand notice, 28 Oct 22:15; Sandton notice, 28 Oct 22:07). There is no restoration time. Melville and the rest of the Commando system are still on bypass, and Hurlingham has a planned 12-hour shutdown today (Johannesburg Water, 28 Oct).

Why is the water off?
Johannesburg Water blames poor incoming supply, which has left the Midrand and Sandton systems severely constrained (Midrand notice; Sandton notice). The city buys its bulk water from Rand Water, which says it is pumping at full capacity and that municipal consumption remains extremely high (Rand Water, 28 Oct). Rand Water began restricting supply to Johannesburg and Tshwane last week for using more than their allocations, and warned this could cause low pressure or intermittent supply (Mail & Guardian).
To spread what water there is, Johannesburg Water is throttling or closing some reservoir outlets overnight. On Wednesday this ran from as early as 14:00 until about 05:00 today, with cuts of 50% to 100% at some outlets (Johannesburg Water, 28 Oct).
When will water return?
No restoration times have been given. Johannesburg Water says pumping at Grand Central Tower will resume once incoming supply improves and reservoir levels recover (Midrand notice). For Sandton, it says teams are monitoring the system around the clock and adjusting it to balance supply (Sandton notice). The Hursthill 2 repairs that keep Melville and nearby suburbs on bypass are scheduled to run until 15 December 2026 (Johannesburg Water, 28 Oct).
What about Roodepoort and Witpoortjie?
The Witpoortjie Reservoir outlet is closed on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 14:00 to 04:00 the next day, so its zone loses water almost immediately from 14:00 today. Pumping to Witpoortjie Tower is restricted on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 14:00 to 06:00. Johannesburg Water says this schedule stays in place until 31 December 2026 (Johannesburg Water, 28 Oct 21:05).
| Supply | Closed or restricted | Times |
|---|---|---|
| Witpoortjie Reservoir outlet | Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday | 14:00 to 04:00 next day |
| Witpoortjie Tower pumping | Monday, Wednesday, Friday | 14:00 to 06:00 next day |
When the outlet opens in the morning, higher-lying areas can take about four hours to get water back (Johannesburg Water).
Are repairs being delayed?
Johannesburg Water said on Wednesday that a SAMWU protest was delaying service requests (Johannesburg Water). SAMWU says its members have been back at work since Tuesday (Sowetan).
What should I do and who do I call?
Store water in clean, sealed containers when supply returns. Johannesburg Water says alternative supply is being arranged with ward councillors (Midrand notice; Sandton notice). Water from official Johannesburg Water tankers is free and must not be sold (Daily Maverick).
