Johannesburg power outages today (8 November 2026): affected areas, causes and when power returns

A cable fire at Mayfair Substation has cut power to Mayfair, Brixton, Vrededorp, Pageview and nearby suburbs on 8 November 2026. Here is what City Power says.

A fire in transformer cables at City Power's Mayfair Substation has cut electricity to Mayfair, Brixton, Vrededorp, Pageview, Crosby, Homestead Park and about a dozen other suburbs west of the Johannesburg CBD on Sunday, 8 November 2026. City Power says it isolated the whole substation and that all distributors will stay off until repairs are complete (City Power, 03:40). No restoration time has been given.

Several outages from Friday and Saturday are also still open in Bryanston, Ferndale, Linden, Kibler Park, Southfork, Roodepoort West and Horizon View.

Which areas got power back overnight?

City Power says supply is fully restored in Wilgespruit, Honeydew, Honeydew Manor, Honeydew Grove and Honeydew Ridge after Saturday's cable fault at Ruimsig Switching Station (City Power, 02:39). Pinepark and Victory Park are also back (City Power, 01:53), as are Hamberg and Florida Lake (City Power, 23:02, 7 Nov).

If your power is still off in one of these areas, log a new call so the fault stays open.

How busy are City Power's depots this morning?

City Power's own figures show the Hursthill service delivery centre, which covers Mayfair, Brixton and Linden, had 774 open calls just before 08:00 on Sunday (City Power, 07:44). Roodepoort had 581 (City Power, 07:37) and Lenasia 404 (City Power, 07:49). Expect slower responses to individual faults while the big outages are being fixed.

When will power be restored?

City Power has not given a restoration time for Mayfair or any of the other open outages. It says Mayfair distributors stay off until repairs are complete and that updates will follow as work progresses (City Power). Switch off non-essential appliances while the power is off, so the network is not overloaded when supply returns.
