MultiChoice says it has cut movie repeats on DStv by 40% by closing some channels and folding their content into fewer, themed ones. Canal+ Africa chief content officer Nomsa Philiso gave the figure to MyBroadband (MyBroadband).

If your favourite movie channel has vanished from the guide, its content has most likely moved. Here is where everything went, and which packages can see it.

Wethu+ also carries two live PSL matches a week, so Starter subscribers get local football there (DStv).

Why did DStv close the channels?

Repeats. Philiso said Bioskop Movies had an 80% repeat ratio, "which was not good for the customer", and that DStv had about ten movie channels before the shake-up. She said the plan is themed days so viewers know what they are tuning in for (MyBroadband).

Willington Ngwepe, CEO of MultiChoice SA LicenceCo, put it simply: "The more channels you have, the higher the likelihood of having a channel reliant on repeats" (MyBroadband).

MultiChoice has defended repeats in the past. In its 2023 annual report it said load-shedding made it necessary to repeat programmes more often (MyBroadband).

Have I lost any movies?

DStv says no. "No content is leaving the ecosystem," Philiso said, describing the content as repositioned rather than removed (MyBroadband). DStv's own guide says Starter, Select and Sports all got more channels than the packages they replaced (DStv).

What you can watch now depends on your package. The main movie channel, M-Net Movies+, is only on Premium and the new Movies & Series package, which costs R500 a month (DStv).

Which package am I on now?

DStv moved subscribers automatically from 17 September 2026: Access became Starter, Family became Select and Compact became Sports. Premium, Compact Plus and EasyView stayed the same. The move happens in phases, so your account may still show the old name while you already get the new channels (DStv).

You can check your current package on the MyDStv app, DStv's WhatsApp self-service line, the DStv website or by calling customer care. The Add Movies add-on is still available (DStv).
