Local election results: when you'll know who won your council
Emerging results from the 4 November local elections appear on the IEC dashboard tonight. Final metro and local council results are due within seven days, around 11 November.

The first results from the 4 November local government elections start appearing on the IEC's official dashboard tonight, soon after voting stations close. Final results and seat allocations for metro and local councils are due within seven days, which points to around 11 November 2026. District councils follow within 14 days (EWN, Sunday World).
Where can you see results as they come in?
The IEC's official results site is results.elections.org.za. It shows municipal results, party support and seat calculations, and the commission says live figures update every five to 10 minutes after stations close (Sunday World).
Are tonight's numbers the final result?
No. Figures on the dashboard while counting continues are emerging results. A result becomes official only once the IEC has received the counts for a ward or municipality, completed its checks, recorded the result on the prescribed form and declared it publicly (Sunday World).
Early numbers can swing a lot, depending on which voting stations report first.
How is your vote counted?
Counting happens at the voting station once voting ends. Officials count the ballots, reconcile the totals and complete results slips, which are then captured into the IEC results system and checked by auditors before release (Sunday World, Sunday World).

The seven-day window is a legal timeframe, not a fixed announcement date. If there's a valid reason for a delay, the IEC can ask the Electoral Court for an extension (Sunday World).
Where are results managed?
The national Results Operations Centre is at Gallagher Convention Centre, 19 Richards Drive, Midrand (IEC). There are provincial centres in East London, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Durban, Polokwane, White River, Kimberley, Mahikeng and Cape Town (Sunday World).
What happens if no party wins a council outright?
Where no party gets a majority, parties have to agree on a coalition to elect a mayor. Reported has a separate explainer on what happens in a hung council.
