Term 4 does not end when your child writes their last exam. Public schools close for learners on Wednesday, 9 December 2026, and teachers work until Friday, 11 December, according to the official 2026 school calendar (Gov.za).

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) stepped in this week after social media posts claimed the holidays would start on Friday, 20 November, once exams were done. That would have meant almost eight weeks at home (The South African).

When does Term 4 end in 2026?

The gazetted calendar for public schools sets out Term 4 like this (DBE 2026 school calendar):

  • Term started: Tuesday, 6 October 2026
  • Last day for learners: Wednesday, 9 December 2026
  • Last day for educators: Friday, 11 December 2026
  • School days for learners: 47

The dates apply to public schools in all nine provinces. Independent schools set their own calendars, so check with yours.

Can schools send learners home after exams?

The DBE says no automatic early closure applies. Spokesperson Terence Khala told The South African that finishing exams "does not automatically signal the end of the school term" and that schools carry on with admin, academic support, sport and cultural activities (The South African).

He said arrangements differ from school to school, and asked parents to speak to their school or school governing body (SGB) about attendance after exams.

In the Western Cape, the education department has been specific. Internal exams may not end before Monday, 30 November without the district director's approval, learners must attend and be kept busy from 1 to 9 December, and on the last day of term they must be at school for at least three hours (WCED circular 0008/2026).

Is 4 November a school day?

No. President Cyril Ramaphosa declared Wednesday, 4 November 2026, a public holiday for the local government elections (The Presidency). Many schools are used as voting stations.

When does school open in 2027?

Learners go back on Wednesday, 13 January 2027, and teachers return on Monday, 11 January (Gov.za). That gives learners about five weeks of holiday after 9 December.

Dates for every term in 2026 and 2027 are on the government's school calendar page.
