How many seats does a party need to run Tshwane alone?

Tshwane's council has 214 seats, so a party needs 108 to govern on its own, according to IEC figures compiled by Rateweb. With the two biggest parties each on under a third of the vote, no party is close to that, which points to another coalition council.

What happens if no party wins a majority?

Parties will have two weeks from the declaration of results to negotiate coalitions, Reuters reported. The declaration is expected on Sunday (Reuters). The new council then elects a speaker, executive mayor and chief whip at its first sitting.

How can you check results for your Tshwane ward?

Use the IEC's official results dashboard. Choose Gauteng, then City of Tshwane, then your ward. Ward winners are declared ward by ward as counting finishes, so your councillor may be confirmed before the full council result.
