Four of South Africa's biggest tourism markets, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, all have active travel advice telling their citizens to take extra care in the country, BusinessTech reported this week. None of them tells people not to come. Here is what each one actually says, and what it means if you have visitors arriving.

What level is each country's warning?

CountryCurrent adviceMain reasons given
CanadaExercise a high degree of caution, updated 28 October 2026Serious crime, municipal election gatherings
AustraliaExercise a high degree of caution, still current at 4 November 2026Violent crime, protests, kidnapping
United KingdomSafety advice in force, no "do not travel" warningCrime, xenophobic and anti-immigration marches
United StatesLevel 2 advisory issued in 2025, plus a recent Durban security alertCrime, unrest, kidnapping

"High degree of caution" is the second rung on both Canada's and Australia's four-step scales. It sits below "avoid non-essential travel" and "do not travel".

Why did Canada update its advice now?

Canada added a section on the 4 November municipal elections on 28 October, according to its official travel page. It warns that rallies and demonstrations could happen during and after the vote and that "even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time", which can disrupt traffic and public transport.

What is the US warning about Durban?

Last month the US Embassy issued a security alert about reports of looting and violence targeting foreign nationals in the Durban CBD, telling its staff to "exercise extreme caution" in the area, BusinessTech reported. The outlet links the unrest to South Africa reopening its asylum system to new applicants.

Which places do the warnings single out?

Australia's Smartraveller names specific spots:

  • The approaches to Kruger National Park, including Numbi Gate, and the Lebombo/Komatipoort border
  • The roads to Pilanesberg National Park and Sun City
  • Hiking trails on Lion's Head, Signal Hill and Table Mountain
  • Secondary roads to Cape Town International Airport, with advice to stay on the N2 or M2 and avoid Borchard's Quarry Road

It also warns about fake "Tourist Police", noting that SAPS has no such unit, and about GPS apps rerouting drivers through unsafe areas.

The UK advice flags an increase in xenophobic and anti-immigration marches, mainly targeting African immigrants, and tells travellers not to cross protester roadblocks.

Does this affect flights, visas or travel insurance?

The advisories don't close borders or cancel flights. Australia confirms its citizens still get visa-free entry for up to 90 days and must complete South Africa's online traveller declaration within 24 hours of departure, Smartraveller says. Insurers in those countries set their own rules, so visitors should check their policy wording.

What should you tell visitors coming to stay?

The practical advice across all four governments overlaps: avoid protests and large gatherings, don't drive after dark in unfamiliar areas, keep car doors locked and valuables out of sight, use ATMs inside shopping centres or banks, and book transport through hotels or rideshare apps. In an emergency the numbers are 10111 for police and 10177 for ambulance and fire services, per Smartraveller.
