SASSA suspended 56,807 grants in 3 months. How to keep yours paid
SASSA warns grants will be suspended if you ignore a review notice. In three months it suspended 56,807 grants after reviews. Here's how to check if you're under review, what documents to bring and how long you have.

SASSA has warned that grant payments will be suspended if beneficiaries ignore a review notice. The agency said on Wednesday that "failure to comply with a review notice may result in the suspension of grant payments" (IOL).
The warning has teeth. Between April and June 2026, SASSA placed 105,600 beneficiaries under review and suspended 56,807 of their grants because they did not meet the review requirements. That is more than half. Only 5,231 of those suspended grants were later reinstated (Minister of Social Development reply to Parliament, via PMG).
What happened to the 105,600 grants SASSA reviewed?
| Outcome (April to June 2026) | Beneficiaries |
|---|---|
| Placed under review | 105,600 |
| Confirmed still eligible | 48,793 |
| Suspended for not complying with the review | 56,807 |
| Suspended, then reinstated after complying | 5,231 |

How long do you have to respond to a review notice?
Up to 90 days in total. You get 30 days to submit the information SASSA asks for. If you don't respond, there is a further 60 days before the grant may be suspended (PMG).
SASSA's advice is not to wait until your money stops before going to an office (SASSA media statement, 29 September 2026).
Why would SASSA review your grant?
The law requires SASSA to check periodically that beneficiaries still qualify. A review can be started when SASSA has reason to believe your finances have changed, when a refugee beneficiary's ID expires, when a foster care court order expires, or when a child on a care dependency grant may no longer be permanently disabled (PMG).
A review is not a cancellation. SASSA says being reviewed does not mean your grant is automatically suspended, and that money being paid into your bank account does not on its own get a grant cancelled (SASSA).
How do you check if your grant is under review?
Use SASSA's WhatsApp self-service line on 082 601 0111 (IOL):
- Send "Hi" to 082 601 0111.
- Choose Social Grants, then your grant type.
- Verify yourself with your cellphone number, the OTP sent to it and your ID number.
- Choose "Am I in Review?".
The reply will say a grant review is required, proof of life verification is required, or your grant is not in review. Where action is needed, it tells you what to do (IOL).
SASSA wants beneficiaries to check this themselves rather than wait for an SMS (IOL). Never share your OTP with anyone who contacts you.
What documents do you need for a SASSA review?
SASSA's 2026 grant booklet lists these, for you and your spouse where it applies (SASSA grant booklet):
- Certified copy of your 13-digit barcoded ID
- Proof of marital status, such as a marriage certificate, divorce order or spouse's death certificate
- Three months of bank statements for all active accounts, including fixed deposits and investments
- Proof of employment and earnings
- Proof of address, such as a utility bill or a letter from your landlord, chief or councillor
- Proof of any other income
- A valid court order for foster child grants
What if your grant has already been suspended?
You must apply to have it restored. The regulations under the Social Assistance Act say SASSA may restore the grant from the date it was suspended, but you have to apply within 90 days (Regulation 31). SASSA's own 2026 booklet gives a shorter window of 30 days (SASSA grant booklet), so go as soon as you notice.
Take the SASSA letter explaining the suspension if you have one. If you don't apply in time, the grant lapses and you have to apply from scratch (SAnews).
When are grants under review paid in November?
On Thursday, 5 November 2026, if the review confirms you still qualify. Other November grants are paid early because of the 4 November elections: older persons' grants on 30 October, disability grants on 2 November and children's grants on 3 November (SAnews).
How do you avoid a review notice going missing?
Update your cellphone number with SASSA whenever it changes. SASSA said beneficiaries who switch numbers without telling it "risk missing important notifications" (IOL). Also report changes in income, job, marital status, address or care arrangements (SASSA).
SASSA's toll-free number is 0800 60 10 11 (SAnews).
