SARS EMP501 deadline is Saturday. Miss it and pay 1% of annual PAYE
Employers must submit their interim EMP501 reconciliation for March to August 2026 by Saturday, 31 October. Here's what it must include, how to file and the penalties for missing it.

Employers who have not yet filed their interim EMP501 reconciliation have until Saturday, 31 October 2026. SARS issued a fresh warning on 29 October, telling employers not to leave it to the last hours because rejected submissions and validation errors take time to fix (SARS).
The return covers the six months from 1 March to 31 August 2026. Filing late can cost 1% of your annual PAYE for every month it stays outstanding, up to 10% (SARS).
Who has to file the EMP501 by 31 October?
Every registered employer. The interim season opened on 21 September and closes on 31 October, and during it all employers must reconcile their declarations for the first half of the tax year (SARS).
What must the reconciliation show?
SARS says a correct EMP501 has to reflect three things (SARS):
- PAYE, UIF and SDL amounts that match the monthly EMP201 returns you already submitted. If the interim IRP5 or IT3(a) certificates show different figures, you must correct the prepopulated amounts.
- The payments you actually made for the period, without penalties and interest.
- Accurate payroll details, employees' income tax reference numbers and the IRP5/IT3(a) certificates for 1 March to 31 August 2026.
Income tax numbers are compulsory. SARS has enforced them since the February 2026 filing season, and missing or invalid numbers can delay processing or get the EMP501 rejected (SARS).

If you use e@syFile, make sure you are on the latest version. SARS released an updated build for this season, with new source codes and revised validations (SARS, SARS).
Is pressing submit enough?
No. SARS says submission doesn't mean the job is done. After you file, check the submission status and your PAYE Dashboard on eFiling to confirm the reconciliation was processed (SARS).
What happens if I miss the deadline?
SARS lists these consequences (SARS):
| Problem | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Late EMP501 | Penalty of 1% of annual PAYE, rising by 1% a month to a maximum of 10% |
| Not submitting, or a non-compliant status | Employers lose any unused Employment Tax Incentive (ETI) |
| Wilful or negligent failure to submit EMP201 or EMP501 returns | A criminal offence, with a fine or up to two years in jail on conviction |
Mistakes in your monthly PAYE also carry a cost. Any shortfall picked up on the reconciliation is treated as belonging to the last month of the period, which can trigger penalties and interest (SARS).
Where can I get help?
SARS has a step-by-step guide to the employer reconciliation and an e@syFile Employer user guide on its PAYE page. Branch visits need an appointment (SARS).
