NSFAS applications for 2027 funding close tomorrow, Saturday 31 October 2026, and the scheme says there will be no extensions (gov.za). More than 1 million people have already applied (gov.za; TimesLIVE).

If you haven't finished yours, today is the day to do it. Missing documents, incomplete information or wrong details can hold up the verification of your application, NSFAS warned (gov.za).

Where do I apply?

Only on the official NSFAS website, www.nsfas.org.za, or the official NSFAS mobile app (gov.za). You register with your South African ID number, cellphone number and email address, then complete the application on your myNSFAS account (NSFAS). Applying is free (NSFAS), so anyone asking you for an application fee is not NSFAS.

Which documents do I need to upload?

It depends on your situation. NSFAS lists these forms for the 2027 cycle (NSFAS):

FormWho needs it
Consent form (APP2027)Everyone. Signed by you and by your parent, guardian or spouse
Declaration formApplicants aged 34 and under, to confirm parent or guardian details
Disability annexure plus medical reportApplicants with a disability, uploaded together as one file
Orphan and vulnerable child declarationApplicants under 18 who are orphaned or vulnerable, completed by a social worker or authorised official

Phone photos are fine, as long as all four corners of the page are visible and the text is readable (NSFAS).

What are the most common mistakes?

The consent form trips up the most people. NSFAS's own presentation on the 2027 cycle lists three common problems: using the wrong year's form (it must say APP2027), only one person signing, and the form being signed by someone not listed on the application (NSFAS 2027 cycle presentation). The people on your declaration form must also match the people on your consent form (NSFAS 2027 cycle presentation).

Who qualifies?

NSFAS targets students from households earning R350 000 a year or less (NSFAS 2027 cycle presentation). For students with a disability, the household income limit is R600 000 (NSFAS). Applicants whose families received the child support grant in the last three years can be funded on that basis, subject to audit checks (NSFAS 2027 cycle presentation).

NSFAS funding does not get you a place to study. You still have to apply to your university or TVET college separately (IOL). Some universities also close other applications on 31 October, such as UJ's student accommodation applications for first-time students (htxt).

When will I hear back, and when can I appeal?

These are the key dates NSFAS set out for the 2027 cycle (NSFAS 2027 cycle presentation):

DateWhat happens
31 October 2026Applications close
30 November 2026Funding decisions finalised internally
1 to 9 December 2026Audit of funding decisions
10 December 2026All funding decisions published and appeals open
24 December 2026Appeals window closes
9 January 2027Appeal outcomes published

How do I check my NSFAS status?

Use only NSFAS's official channels. Sign in to your myNSFAS account through www.nsfas.org.za or the official NSFAS app to see where your application is and whether anything is needed from you (NSFAS). Keep your application reference number safe (NSFAS).

If your status says documents are missing or unreadable, sign in and upload them (NSFAS). A status showing funding eligible means you meet the criteria, but funding is only confirmed once you register at a public university or TVET college (NSFAS). If you are unsuccessful, the reason is shown on myNSFAS and you can appeal within the appeal window (NSFAS).

Don't share your myNSFAS password or one-time PIN with anyone, and don't pay anyone who offers to "fast track" your application.
