Nahoon Beach shut after shark sighting, 4 days after fatal attack

Nahoon Beach in KuGompo City (East London) is closed to swimmers after a shark was spotted there on Saturday morning, 24 October 2026 (Daily Dispatch). Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has told bathers and beachgoers to stay out of the water until further notice and has not given a reopening date (IOL).

Orient Beach and Eastern Beach, closed since a fatal shark attack on Tuesday, are open again for swimming and surfing (SABC News).

Why is Nahoon Beach closed?

The metro called the closure a precaution after the sighting. It said the beach will reopen to bathers only once it can confirm it is safe, and asked the public to follow all safety instructions from beach officials (IOL).

Nahoon is the second KuGompo City beach area closed this week. On Tuesday, 20 October, a 65-year-old open-water swimmer was killed by a shark at Orient Beach while swimming with a group (Daily Dispatch). We covered that attack and the first closures here.

Which East London beaches are open now?

• Nahoon Beach: closed to swimmers until further notice (IOL).
• Orient Beach: open for swimming and surfing (SABC News).
• Eastern Beach: open for swimming and surfing (SABC News).

The metro reopened Orient and Eastern after what it called a thorough assessment of conditions (SABC News).

When are lifeguards on duty?

Lifeguards work from 08:30 to 17:00 daily, according to the metro's public notice on the reopening (Komani News). Municipal spokesperson Luzuko Buku said bathers should swim only where lifeguards are on duty and discouraged swimming outside those hours (SABC News).

Buku said hours will run from about 07:00 to 18:00 over the festive season, when seasonal lifeguards are hired, and up to 20:00 at peak times (SABC News).

How will I know when Nahoon reopens?

The municipality says it will reopen the beach once it confirms it is safe (IOL). Check Buffalo City Metro's official channels and the signs and flags at the beach before going in.
