St James Walkway reopens at Muizenberg. What's still being built
Cape Town reopened the St James Walkway at Surfer's Corner and a new western parking area on 23 October 2026. The Muizenberg beachfront upgrade is 84% done, with most work due by mid-December.

The St James Walkway is open again from Surfer's Corner in Muizenberg, and so is a new paved parking area on the western side of the beach. The City of Cape Town opened both on Friday, 23 October 2026, and says most of the remaining beachfront work will be finished by mid-December (City of Cape Town).
What reopened at Muizenberg?
- St James Walkway access at Surfer's Corner, so you can reach the western side of the beach and walk towards St James again.
- The western parking area next to the railway line, now paved, with benches, kerbing that contains recycled plastic, universal access parking and pedestrian walkways.
The streetlights in the new parking area will only be switched on once the whole project is finished (City of Cape Town).
When will the beachfront upgrade be finished?
The City says the bulk of the work will be done by the builders' break in December, with most of it finished by mid-December. Work started on site in February 2025 and the project is more than 84% complete (City of Cape Town).
Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews thanked residents and businesses for putting up with "a lot of noise, movement, and machinery" over roughly 20 months (City of Cape Town).
What is still being built?
According to the City (City of Cape Town):
- A new central ablution block, with roofing still to come.
- Refurbished Shark Spotters and Adaptive Surfing buildings, which are close to being painted.
- The last stretch of the stepped seawall (revetment). About 85% of the precast steps and promenade units are in place. Most will sit below the sand and won't be visible under normal conditions.
- A pergola, planters, seating walls and a new playground.
Old sandstone from the demolished seawalls is being reused in the landscaping, the playground, wall cladding on the western side and seating at the station forecourt.
Why is the City rebuilding the beachfront?
The project replaces Muizenberg's ageing seawalls, which the City describes as degraded, and upgrades the public facilities along the beachfront (City of Cape Town).
How can I raise concerns about the project?
The next community meeting is on Thursday, 12 November 2026, from 17:30 to 19:00 at the Muizenberg Civic Centre in Beach Road (City of Cape Town).
