More than 2.2 million vehicle licence discs expire in November and December, and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) wants them renewed before the festive rush. The exact figure is 2,248,795 discs, with Gauteng alone accounting for 851,687 (TimesLIVE).

If yours is one of them, you have 21 days after the expiry date to renew without paying extra. After that, arrears and late penalties are added (gov.za).

How many discs expire in your province?

The RTMC's provincial breakdown for November and December (Gauteng News Agency):

  • Gauteng: 851,687
  • Western Cape: 374,761
  • KwaZulu-Natal: 327,014
  • Mpumalanga: 150,725
  • Eastern Cape: 150,521
  • Limpopo: 131,274
  • Free State: 107,098
  • North West: 106,663
  • Northern Cape: 49,052

How long can you drive after your disc expires?

The grace period is 21 days, counted from the expiry date on your current disc (gov.za). Renew inside that window and you pay only the normal annual fee. Miss it and you will owe arrears and penalties on top (gov.za). The Western Cape government also warns you can be liable for late licensing penalties if you don't renew (Western Cape Government).

A disc that expires on 30 November, for example, must be renewed by 21 December to avoid the extra charges, which falls right in the middle of holiday travel.

How do you renew without standing in a queue?

Online, at online.natis.gov.za. You register a profile with your ID number and address, choose "View Motor Renewals", pick the vehicle and pay by card. The new disc is couriered to your home or workplace (gov.za). The RTMC has said delivery takes three to five days (gov.za), so leave yourself time before the grace period ends.

The RTMC says the platform has handled about 8 million transactions since it launched in 2022 (Arrive Alive). Clients of Capitec, FNB and Nedbank can also reach it through their banking apps, according to the RTMC (SAnews).

What do you need if you renew in person?

Go to your registering authority or a post office that issues licences. Take your ID, proof of residential address and your renewal notice (MVL2). If you didn't get a notice, fill in form ALV at the counter (gov.za). Renewal notices are no longer posted in the Western Cape; they come by SMS or email, or you can download one (Western Cape Government).

If someone renews on your behalf, they need a letter of permission, a certified copy of your ID and their own ID (Western Cape Government).

What about your driving licence?

The RTMC is also asking drivers to renew driving licence cards before they expire. Its driving licence testing centres are running extended hours, seven days a week from 07:00 to 21:00 (Arrive Alive). Check with your nearest centre that it is one of the RTMC-run sites before you go.

What else is the RTMC asking drivers to check?

Before long trips, get the car serviced and check tyres, brakes, lights and wipers. RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said rain is expected in parts of the country over the festive season, so tyre grip and working wipers matter (TimesLIVE). Heavy vehicle drivers are asked to have health checks before long-distance trips (TimesLIVE).
