Leratong City Shopping Centre in Kagiso, on Gauteng's West Rand, opened on Thursday, 29 October 2026, with 89 shops including Shoprite, Pick n Pay and a DStv outlet (MyBroadband). It is the first big piece of a planned R5 billion "Leratong Smart City" that is meant to bring thousands of homes and jobs to the area (MyBroadband).

Where is the new Leratong mall?

The mall sits next to Leratong Hospital, which dates from the 1970s, and the Chamdor industrial precinct in Mogale City (Krugersdorp area) (MyBroadband). It falls under the Mogale City Local Municipality.

What is planned beyond the mall?

The figures have shifted between municipal plans, so here is what each says (MyBroadband):

PlanHomes planned
Mogale City IDP 2021/22 to 2025/26, phase 11,900
Same IDP, phase 213,000 plus commercial units
Draft IDP 2026/27, total potential16,000

The project is a partnership between the Gauteng government, Mogale City, Trendville Investments and McCormick Property Development (MyBroadband).

How many jobs will it create?

Building the mall created 1,096 jobs, and the full development is expected to support about 2,500 permanent jobs once complete (MyBroadband). No timeline for those permanent jobs has been given.

Is it really a smart city?

That part is unclear. Premier Panyaza Lesufi called Leratong "a new post-apartheid city", but the municipal plans so far give no detail on the digital or ICT infrastructure that would make it a smart city, MyBroadband found (MyBroadband). The project is described as including renewable energy and integrated infrastructure, without specifics.

Why is Gauteng building "mega cities"?

Leratong is one of Gauteng's planned "Mega Cities", large mixed developments along major transport routes that combine housing with shops, services and business space. The aim is to cut the province's housing backlog while creating work closer to where people live (MyBroadband).

Can I apply for a house there?

No application process has been announced. Government-subsidised housing in Gauteng is allocated through the provincial housing database, so check with the Gauteng Department of Human Settlements or Mogale City before paying anyone who claims to sell a spot.
