The DA has about 40% of the party vote in Johannesburg's early count, more than double its nearest rival. At about 10:00 on Thursday, 5 November, the DA had 40.71%, the ANC 17.10%, ActionSA 15.41% and the EFF 6.37%, Inside Metros reported.

Only around one in ten of the city's voting districts had been counted, so this is far from final.

By 09:52, 85 of Johannesburg's 862 voting districts had been counted and none of its 135 wards was complete, Joburg ETC reported. The ANC and ActionSA swapped second place within an hour, at one point separated by only 186 votes (Joburg ETC).

Why is the ANC ahead in more wards if the DA leads the vote?

Ward and PR results tell different stories early on. The Outlier's tracker showed the ANC leading in 12 wards and the DA in 10, with ActionSA ahead in 2 and 111 wards still without results (The Outlier).

That doesn't contradict the DA's PR lead. Ward seats fill half the council, and the PR vote then tops parties up so their total seats match their share of the PR vote. A party that wins many wards can end up with few PR seats, and the reverse.

Can anyone govern Johannesburg alone?

Johannesburg's council has 270 seats, so a party needs 136 to govern alone, according to IEC figures compiled by Rateweb. On about 40%, the DA would fall short, and several polls predicted no majority winner in the city (Inside Metros). That points to another coalition.

When is the final result?

The IEC said it will officially announce results on Sunday, 8 November (Inside Metros). It has up to seven days to declare final results (Joburg ETC).

How can you check your ward?

Use the IEC's official results dashboard: pick Gauteng, City of Johannesburg, then your ward. Ward results are declared ward by ward as counting finishes.
