Why is City Power cutting the power?
The utility says the work services ageing equipment, finds and replaces faulty parts and lowers the risk of unplanned breakdowns. It also prepares the network for higher demand, especially in winter, City Power said.
This is separate from Eskom load reduction, which still affects parts of Gauteng in areas Eskom supplies directly. Eskom said on 23 October that South Africa had gone 525 days without load-shedding.
Could the power come back early?
Yes. City Power says supply may be restored before the scheduled end time, so it warns residents to treat every electrical point as live for the whole period. It also asks customers to unplug appliances during the outage so a sudden return of power does not damage them.
What should you do before the cut?
- Charge phones, laptops and power banks the night before.
- Switch off and unplug appliances such as fridges, geysers, TVs and computers once the power goes.
- If the power is still off well after the scheduled end time, log a fault with City Power and keep the reference number.
