HSBC no longer has permission to operate as a bank in South Africa. A notice in the Government Gazette on 23 October 2026 says the authorisation for HSBC Bank plc's Johannesburg branch "to conduct the business of a bank" was withdrawn with effect from 18 September 2026 (BusinessTech).

It is the last formal step in an exit HSBC announced in September 2024. If you are an ordinary account holder at a South African bank, nothing changes for you: HSBC's local branch did not offer personal or retail banking (Reuters).

Who did HSBC bank in South Africa?

Mainly the local subsidiaries of multinational companies and some large South African corporates (Moneyweb). The branch offered commercial and investment banking only (Reuters).

Where did HSBC's clients go?

  • Corporate banking clients: moved to FirstRand Bank, through its corporate and investment bank RMB. The deal covered the branch's clients, staff, and banking assets and liabilities (Daily Investor; Moneyweb).
  • Equities and securities finance clients: Absa gives them access to the South African market (Reuters).

HSBC's website now says the sale and transfer of its South African branch business to FirstRand has been completed (HSBC South Africa).

Multinational clients based outside South Africa can still see and make payments from their South African accounts through HSBC's global digital channels, even though those accounts now sit with RMB (HSBC South Africa; Moneyweb).

How did the exit happen?

  • 26 September 2024: HSBC agrees to transfer its South African business to FirstRand and signs a separate deal with Absa (Reuters).
  • 10 June 2025: FirstRand says the deal has the regulatory approvals it needs, with completion expected by 31 October 2025 (Moneyweb).
  • 1 September 2025: the Prudential Authority closes the South African representative office of HSBC Private Bank (Suisse), a related but separate entity (Government Gazette).
  • 15 May 2026: the Reserve Bank cancels the Johannesburg branch's status as an authorised dealer in foreign exchange, with immediate effect (SARB Exchange Control Circular 17/2026).
  • 18 September 2026: the branch's banking authorisation is withdrawn, gazetted on 23 October (BusinessTech).

Why did HSBC leave?

HSBC said it was winding down all its legal entities in South Africa as part of a wider group shift towards Asia (Reuters). It first opened a South African office in 1995 (Daily Investor). None of the regulatory notices gives a reason beyond the exit itself.
