Harry Potter starts on 25 December. Why you can't watch it on DStv yet

HBO's new Harry Potter series premieres on 25 December 2026, but as things stand South African viewers have no legal way to watch it. DStv has no deal for HBO shows, and the HBO Max app isn't available in South Africa (MyBroadband).

When does the Harry Potter series start?

The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, debuts on Christmas Day (HBO Max). It's set to air in more than 100 countries on TV and on HBO Max (MyBroadband).

HBO plans to run the show for about a decade, with each of the seven books getting its own season (Maroela Media).

Why isn't it on DStv?

M-Net's decades-old deal for HBO and Warner Bros content ended at the end of December 2025 and wasn't renewed (TV with Thinus). A last-minute agreement kept 12 Warner Bros. Discovery channels such as CNN, Discovery and Cartoon Network on DStv, but it left out HBO's premium shows (MyBroadband).

That's why House of the Dragon and The Gilded Age disappeared from M-Net this year, and why DStv never showed A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms or Lanterns (MyBroadband).

Could DStv still get it before Christmas?

Possibly, but nothing is signed. Nomsa Philiso, Canal+ Africa's content executive for English- and Portuguese-speaking countries, said talks with HBO were ongoing but she couldn't say when content would return (MyBroadband).

Canal+, which took control of MultiChoice in September 2025, has been cutting costs. DStv has dropped 16 channels since the start of 2026 (MyBroadband).

Can you get HBO Max in South Africa?

No. HBO Max is not available in South Africa, and Warner Bros. Discovery hasn't said which platform, if any, will carry the series here (MyBroadband, Maroela Media).

Using a VPN to reach a foreign streaming service may breach that service's terms, and pirated copies are illegal, so the safe option is to wait for an official South African announcement.

How is DStv doing?

MultiChoice's like-for-like revenue fell 3% in the nine months to 30 September 2026, according to Canal+'s trading update (MyBroadband). Its last annual results before delisting showed South African subscribers dropping 7.7%, from 7.6 million to 7.0 million (MyBroadband).
