Parts of Pinetown South and surrounding areas west of Durban still have no reliable water on Monday, 2 November 2026, after about two weeks of interruptions. eThekwini Municipality says the Washington Heights and Intake reservoirs are empty and it cannot yet give a date for normal supply to return (IOL).

Which Durban areas have no water?

eThekwini's notice lists these areas, grouped by the part of the system that supplies them (The South African):

Supply systemAreas affected
N Pump StationKlaarwater, Phumphele, St Wendolins, parts of Nsizwaqkazi, Savannah Park Phases 1 and 2, Wiltshire Factories
Washington Heights ReservoirKlaarwater, Nsizwaqkazi, Regency Park, Latana, Hlanganisa, Gwala Road, Sarjoo Road
Intake ReservoirDemat, Progress Road, Mawelewele, Intake Road, Luganda, parts of Nagina Township, Khoseleni, Sthundu Hills, Dambuza, parts of Bell Tower Road, parts of Grasmere Road, Mpongo Road

Why is there no water in Pinetown South?

The municipality says bulk supplier uMngeni-uThukela Water has curtailed supply at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works. That has cut flows through the Southern Aqueduct and lowered levels at the Northdene and Shallcross reservoirs. The whole Pinetown South system depends on Shallcross, so as it dropped, Washington Heights and Intake ran dry (IOL, The Mercury).

On 24 October eThekwini had already imposed water restrictions, saying high demand had drained levels in Pinetown South, Nagina, Folweni, Demat and Washington Heights (IOL).

When will water come back?

There is no official restoration time. "At this stage, we cannot give a confirmed timeframe for restoring normal water supply," the municipality said. Pumping will only restart once Shallcross stabilises and there are enough inflows from the Southern Aqueduct (IOL). Expect supply to return gradually rather than all at once.

Where can I get water in the meantime?

eThekwini says water tankers have been arranged for interim relief, including in Klaarwater, St Wendolins, Savannah Park, Regency Park, Luganda and parts of Nagina Township (IOL). Use water sparingly when it does come back, and store it in clean, sealed containers.
