Collins Chabane ANC wins majority: Mayibuye second with 10 seats

Provisional IEC figures now show the African National Congress with a majority on the Collins Chabane local council: 47 of 71 seats, after all 36 wards and 198 voting districts were declared in this Vhembe municipality in Limpopo (The Outlier, update 17:58 Africa/Johannesburg on 6 November 2026; ESP Collins Chabane results from IEC data; Rateweb Collins Chabane results).

A party needs 36 seats for an outright majority on this 71-seat council. The ANC is eleven seats clear. Treat seats as provisional until the IEC formally declares the council.

Afrika Mayibuye Movement, contesting here for the first time, is the clear second party with 10 seats and about 14% of the vote (Rateweb; SABC Elections). In 2021 the ANC held 55 of 71 seats on the same-sized council (Inkmark 2021 seat summary). ESP puts the ANC PR share at about 66.3%, down from about 77.8% in 2021 for this municipality (ESP Collins Chabane).

What is the Collins Chabane seat split?

How did the wards and votes fall?

ESP's reading of IEC ward results shows the ANC won all 36 wards. Mayibuye's ten seats all come from the proportional list (ESP Collins Chabane).

On the PR ballot alone, ESP lists Mayibuye second on about 13.9%, ahead of the EFF on about 4.6%, the DA on about 3.6% and ActionSA on about 3.4% (ESP). SABC Elections earlier reported Mayibuye as the second largest party in both Collins Chabane and Greater Giyani while counting was still under way in Limpopo (SABC Elections).

What happens next for the mayor and services?

Because one party has more than half the seats, it can elect the speaker and mayor without needing a coalition partner once the IEC declares the result. Under the Municipal Structures Act, the new council must hold its first meeting within 14 days of the results being gazetted and then elect its office-bearers (Municipal Structures Act on SAFLII; our hung-council mayor timeline guide covers the same 14-day clock).

Council control decides the budget for water, roads, refuse, electricity distribution where the municipality is the licensed distributor, and housing waiting lists. Residents should still treat today's seat numbers as provisional until the IEC declaration, which is due by about 11 November 2026 in the ordinary course (IEC results dashboard).
