The Changan Deepal S05 goes on sale in South Africa this week at R699 900, according to The Citizen and the Changan Table View dealer listing. It comes in one version only: a range-extended electric SUV, where a small petrol engine charges the battery but never drives the wheels.

Some launch reports, including CarMag and Saffarazzi, give the price as R699 000. DRIVE notes that importer Jameel Motors' own release quotes R699 900 in its headline and R699 000 in its body, so ask the dealer for a written quote before you sign.

The Citizen calls the five-year plan a maintenance plan, while CarMag and Saffarazzi call it a service plan and list a maintenance plan as an optional extra. That difference matters for wear items like brakes, so check which one your quote includes.

How does a range extender work?

The S05 is driven only by a 160kW, 320Nm electric motor on the rear axle, fed by a 27.28kWh lithium iron phosphate battery (CarMag). The 1.5-litre petrol engine (72kW) works purely as a generator to recharge that battery once it runs low (The Citizen).

In practice you can plug it in and drive on electricity for short trips, then carry on with petrol when there is no charger around. That is the selling point in a country where public chargers are still thin outside the main routes.

How far can it go?

Changan claims up to 175km on battery alone and more than 1 000km in total with the petrol generator running (Saffarazzi). The dealer page quotes up to 200km of electric range, and Changan has not said which test cycle sits behind either figure (DRIVE). Real-world range will usually be lower, especially at highway speeds.

A DC fast charger takes the battery from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, and it also charges from a normal AC wallbox. It has vehicle-to-load, so the battery can power small appliances (Saffarazzi).

Claimed performance is 0 to 100km/h in under eight seconds and a 175km/h top speed.

How big is it?

The S05 is 4 620mm long, 1 900mm wide and 1 600mm tall, on a 2 880mm wheelbase, with a 464-litre boot. That makes it 130mm shorter and 30mm narrower than the all-electric Deepal S07, which until now was the only Deepal model sold here (CarMag).

What features come standard?

Standard kit listed by The Citizen includes:

  • 15.4-inch rotating touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • augmented-reality head-up display
  • 14-speaker sound system and panoramic roof
  • heated and ventilated electric front seats
  • 540-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking
  • six airbags and 18-inch alloy wheels

Colours are white, black, grey, silver and blue, with a black or orange interior.
