The City of Cape Town will switch off water in more than a dozen areas next week for pipe, valve and pressure work. The shutdowns run on Monday 2, Tuesday 3 and Thursday 5 November 2026, mostly from about 08:00 or 09:00 until early evening, and the City says affected homes will have no water while the work is done (City of Cape Town).

Tuesday is the heaviest day, with seven full shutdowns from Ottery and Steenberg to Fish Hoek, Kommetjie and Kleinvlei. No work is listed for Wednesday 4 November, election day (City of Cape Town).

Nearby streets could also be hit, and Gordon's Bay residents may get low pressure rather than a complete cut. The Brackenfell shutdown is to replace a faulty 300mm valve on the main that feeds those suburbs (City of Cape Town).

Where are the pressure tests?

These areas face zero-pressure tests, which the City uses before installing pressure-reducing valves. Some homes will lose water and others will only see low pressure, and the City says it can't predict which streets (City of Cape Town).

A leak detection team will also walk the streets of Racecourse, Kenridge, Kenilworth and Gunnery from 2 to 6 November, between 09:30 and 15:00. That work won't cut your supply (City of Cape Town).

How should you prepare?

The City's advice is simple (City of Cape Town):

  • Fill clean containers with enough water for drinking, cooking and flushing before the shutdown starts, and seal them.
  • Keep your taps closed during the cut so you don't get leaks or damage when the water comes back.
  • Stay away from the work sites, which are treated as construction zones.

Jobs can run longer than planned if the repair turns out to be more complex, so store a bit more than you think you'll need (City of Cape Town).

Why is my water milky after it comes back?

Trapped air in the pipes can make water look cloudy or discoloured for a short while after supply returns. The City says it clears if you leave it to stand in a glass (City of Cape Town).

Where can you get updates?

The City posts progress on the work, and where tankers are parked, on its @CityofCTAlerts account on X (City of Cape Town).
