The DA is on track for an outright majority in Cape Town. With 97% of voting districts counted on Saturday, 7 November 2026, Rateweb's IEC tracker projects 134 of 235 council seats for the DA. A party needs 118 seats to govern the metro alone.

These figures are provisional. The IEC allocates proportional representation (PR) seats only when a council reaches 100%, and official final results are due on Sunday, 8 November (Tshwane Bulletin, quoting IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya).

How many ward seats does the DA already have?

Ward seats are declared as each ward finishes. So far the DA has 78 ward seats and the ANC 23, with PR seats (half the 235-seat council) still to be allocated once counting hits 100% (Rateweb).

That ward lead already puts the DA well clear of every other party before the PR top-up.

Is Cape Town the only metro with a clear majority?

Yes, on current projections. Of the eight metros, only Cape Town is on course for a single-party majority. Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, eThekwini, Nelson Mandela Bay, Buffalo City and Mangaung are hung or still counting toward hung outcomes (Rateweb national board, IOL).

What about the rest of the Western Cape?

Across the province the DA remains the largest party and has kept outright majorities in councils including Bergrivier, Drakenstein, Hessequa, Mossel Bay, Overstrand, Stellenbosch and Swartland. It also won an outright majority in George by a slim margin, ending years of coalitions there (EWN).

The Patriotic Alliance has become the DA's main challenger in several Western Cape municipalities, finishing ahead of the ANC as second-largest party in places such as George, Berg River, Swartland, Saldanha Bay, Matzikama and Cape Agulhas (EWN). Sixteen Western Cape councils are still hung and will need partners.

When are the final results announced?

The IEC has scheduled the official national results announcement for Sunday evening, 8 November 2026, around 18:00 (Tshwane Bulletin). Live, provisional figures stay on the IEC results dashboard until then.

After councils are declared, parties usually have up to 14 days to elect a mayor where no party holds a majority. Cape Town's projected DA majority would mean it can elect a mayor without a coalition partner, once the IEC confirms the seat allocation.
